Sleep is very important for everyone, especially kids. They are learning and growing so much everyday. Your evening routine sets the tone for how fast and well everyone sleeps. I am a big fan of helping kids be as independent as possible when it comes to routines. Here are my top 5 helpful tips for helping your kids bedtime routine go more smoothly.
1.Start as close to the same time as possible.
Set alarms on your phone, google, or even a regular alarm clock.
2. Prep bedtime items ahead
Have kids lay out pjs earlier in the day before they are starting to get tired.
3.Invest in systems/helpful gadgets
Here is a toothpaste dispenser we use to reduce waste and encourage our kids to brush their teeth all by themselves.https://www.amazon.com/iHave-Toothpaste-Dispenser-Bathroom-Automatic/dp/B08BBZKBQH/ref=sr_1_5?crid=35PQF7W8GWFWH&keywords=i+have+toothbrush+dispenser&qid=1673525716&sprefix=i+have+toothbrush+disp%2Caps%2C2005&sr=8-5
4. Plan 15min extra for reading time.
I have found that my kids really enjoy reading. In the beginning it seemed to be used as an reason to stay up later. and then I would be telling them no and everyone would get frustrated. Now we make sure to plan some extra time for reading which also helps them to wind down and start getting their bodies ready to fall asleep.
5. Talk to your pediatrician about possible supplements/essential oils, ect.
Our oldest son has autism. He has an incredibly difficult time winding down at night. We made sure no screens were used before bed, followed the same routine, and tried music, fidgets and different types of night lights and a weighted blanket. Even when we knew he was completely exhausted, most of the time he would lay in bed fidgeting around for an hour or more. I had heard about melatonin and supplements like that before, but in general I try to avoid my kids consuming medicines unless it is absolutely necessary. I talked to my sister, who is a pharmacist, and found a liquid melatonin for my son to try. It has been a huge help in getting him to fall asleep faster and get a better night sleep overall.
I hope these 5 bedtime routine tips are helpful in creating a most peaceful and restful home! They have been a huge help at our house.
