We all have a shelf or 2 (or 10) full of games, puzzles, and toys. I can’t be the only mom with toys up to my eyeballs and kids who still proclaim they are bored! How can that possibly be?! I played with rocks and acorns when I was a kid!
This post is all about a few creative games that our kids love and play regularly as a way to spend family or one on one time together. I know your kids will love these creative games too!
Newness wears off very quickly for kids. My first response to the boredom statement is “It good to be bored! Now get creative!
Most of the time, I send them off and they almost always come back with something that genuinely impresses me. Like taking small wooden blocks and taping them to a flip flop to create high heels!
Sometimes I finish up what I am doing and join them to go create something fun together.
Our kids love “special time”. This is 1 on 1 time for about 10minutes with each child. No phones or distractions. Set a timer and focus on connection and playing whatever your child chooses. We try to do something screen free.
Here are some creative, awesome games that our kids absolutely love! These creative games are sure to fill your home with laughter and happy squeals!
- Ball game-we use soft balls (nerf, beach balls, squishy) and put them in a pile at the bottom of the steps. Someone stands at the top of the steps and then it is basically dodgeball. We have never had anyone fall down the steps. Normally they are backing away or side to side to dodge the ball. You can easily play this in a large open space.
- Tickle attack-I dont know many kids that dont love being tickled. My kids and I always have a blast.
- Laugh game-1 person takes turns standing up and acting or saying something silly. The first person to laugh stands up and takes their turn.
Spending time together as a family is so important. It can be easy for parents to say I’ve got things to do or I’m too tired to play or I’m not into the games my kids like to play. Taking 15 minutes to get on our kids level and into their world, pays off tremendously in the long run. There will always be chores to do, work to get done, and a hundred things on our to do lists. Our kids will only be with us for so long. They grow up so fast. I dont know about you, but time is flying by and I am not one bit ashamed to admit that when my 10 year old leaves home in 8 years, I am going to be a mess!
It is so easy to get stuck in the moment of messes and kids that don’t always listen and think the way we do. Spending time playing creative games and talking with our kids is way more important than most other chores that feel like they need to be done.
Im not saying let your house become a pigsty. Working on chores with your kids is another way to spend time together and teach them that you can make chores more fun. Read more about having kids help with chores here.
